President Elmira Mangum has identified sustainability as one of the strategic priorities for Florida A&M University, with goals of promoting innovations in teaching and research, saving money and resources, and positioning FAMU as a best-in-class university engaged with addressing urgent challenges. As a campus community, we are embarking on a journey to become a model insitution: one that promotes stewardship of economic, social, and ecological resources while growing a green economy and preparing our students with essential 21st century skills.
The FAMU Sustainability Action Plan will be the primary guiding document for realizing the university's broad sustainability priority.
The strategic plan will be a result of a campus-wide, collaborative process of benchmarking, visioning and ideation beginning with focus teams in Fall 2015 and the first Sustainabilit Indaba Summit in February 2016. A preliminary draft is posted here and further input on the draft plan is solicited from the entire campus community.
FAMU will implement its sustainability initiatives through a distributed network and a collaborative governance structure. Borrowing from the Zulu/Xhosa word for a gathering of concerned community members, the Indaba Council is the university’s primary network of campus champions who develop recommendations, advocate for policies and programs, and spearhead implementation of prioritized actions in partnership with academic and administrative units. The Indaba council consists of faculty, staff and students who lead topic-based Focus Teams and includes representation from the university’s academic and operations functions. The Indaba council, with administrative support from the Sustainability Institute, will continue to host an annual summit in the Spring (Sustainability Indaba), bringing the campus together to report on progress, share ideas and collaborate on new initiatives.
We invite you to submit your feedback on the overarching goals and objectives of the draft Sustainability Action Plan using the online form below. A more detailed plan, with specific recommendations, metrics and strategic plan / master plan alignment will be added.
